 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kodokan is the original school of Judo founded by Jigoro Kano and still the international technical authoriy for Judo.
THE SYMBOL: The standard emblem of the Kodokan is an 8 petaled flower of the cherry tree. It was adopted by the Samurai because the flower is detached from the branch at the apogee of its beauty in order to die. The cherry blossom (sakurabana) was considered an especially beautiful and important symbol for Japanese samurai because at the height of beauty it would inevitably fall to the ground to die. The Samurai had to be willing to sacrifice themselves in their prime, and the cherry blossom was evidence that this is the natural way of things and could also be beautiful and pure. "Life is as delicate and light as the falling petals, and there is a natural time for all beautiful things to end". Meditating on the blossom of the cherry tree brought peace, tempered by the inner strength, power and fighting spirit represented by the center circle of red. "In Judo we learn to harmonize our spirit and body, learning to both fight hard and let go softly.
The Kodokan symbol is the representation of Yata no Kagami, or "The Mirror Yata" or "The Octagonal Mirror". (Some mirrors found with inscriptions on the rim indicate possible ritual usage by Daoist priests).  According to the mythical history of Japan, the Gods offered three sacred gifts to the first Japanese emperor to prove his "divine descendant":
1. Kusanagi No Tsurugi - "The Sword Kusanagi"
2. Yasakni No Magatama _ "The Jewel Yasakani"
3. Yata No Kagami - "The Mirror Yata"
The Yata no Kagami is not a normal mirror, Unlike normal mirrors that reflect our external image, Yata no Kagami reflects our soul.
There are always mirrors inside Shinto temples (it is said the original Yata no Kagame still remains untouched inside the a Shinto temple in Japan). Representing the Judoka's search for purifying his/her soul,  and the virtues of Judo which the Judoka should focus on.
SHITO RYU: This system was passed on from Sensei Itosu and Sensei Higashionna. In Kanji, the second two kanji symbols in their names would spell "Shi" and "To". Sensei Mabuni combined these letters to form the name of the style "Shito-Ryu". Sensei Mabuni was the 17th generation son of a famous Samurai who instructed many students, amoung them Sensei Sakagami, who in turn taught new generations, including Sensei Fumio Demura.
INSTRUCTORS are carefully chosen; first for their ability in this Art, and equally important, for their dedication and proficiency in teaching. The standards of the Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai are exactly the same as those in Japan. Our policy of exchange students and instructors in which Japanese experts visit our group and our members make frequent visits to schools in Japan, bears out this fact.
Colorado has various studios and types of Karate. Some highly respected and others are of questionable merit. For this reason, Shihan Demura has made sure that his dojos will be operated by Black Belts who are completely reliable and qualified to teach the best methods possible.
