High Altitude Cross-Training Summer & Winter Camp Health Benefits

.....   Brief Topics; Safety Tips & Hints   .....

SSG Health Tip: DIZZINESS; adj. To experience a whirling sensation. (vertigo)

Symptoms: Cardinal symptom of hypertension is light headed or dizziness. If blood pressure is sufficiently low, fainting and often seizures may occur. Low blood pressure is often associated with particular symptoms, many which are related to causes rather than effects of hypertension. [Chest pain, Shortness of breath, Irregular heartbeat, Head ache, Stiff neck, Cough with phlegm, Severe upper back pain, Prolonged diarrhea with vomiting, Foul smelling urine, Seizures, Loss of consciousness, Profound fatigue, Temporary blurring or loss of vision].

Treatment: Treating hypertension depends on its causes. Chronic hypertension rarely exists as more than a symptom. Here are some suggestions to raise blood pressure and avoid the unwanted symptoms of hypertension.

A. Drink at least 6 cups of water and 2 cups of fruit with high concentrates of water a day. grapes, melons etc. (If exercising increase H2o consumption). B. Augment sodium in your diet. C. Incorporate a low complex carbohydrate diet (avoiding refined flour products, and starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread). D. Limit your caffeine intake. E. Avoid standing for long periods of time. 6. Add moderate exercise such as walking and/or biking.

Adding electrolytes to your diet can also relieve symptoms of mild hypertension. Lying in a prone position on ones back and elevating the legs will increase venous return, thus making more blood available to critical organs at the chest and head.

If you experience symptoms of hypertension on a regular basis, consult with your physician.

Photo showing peaks above Timberline.

Timberline is defined as an imaginary boundary above which trees will not grow. The exact elevation is determined by climate, slope aspect and the species of tree, and varies from 11,000 to 12,000 feet in Colorado . The trees near the absolute boundary are very short, and are usually twisted and scarred by the harsh winds.

Timberline Varies and Increases in Elevation as you move toward the Equator and decreases in Elevation as you move toward the Poles.

Q: Coach Kirk, what is SSG Tri-Quad MD Link?

A. "SSG Tri-Quad MD Link is an invaluable resource of highly specialized Doctors and Physicians".

*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

How and why were these particular Doctors & Practitioners chosen?

"My beginning research of common perspective interests in high altitude physiological effects on the human body unveiled to me, 18 years ago a proportion of these physicians were already on the pathway of gathering and documenting their research.   Part of my pilot-research included meeting personally and speaking with each of the particular Doctors and physicians mentioned. This is not my full list of all the Doctors I came in contact with over the years of my research. Although I began to compile over the years during personal contact and the many phone conversations that indeed the Doctors mentioned are true-specialist in their diversified and perspective fields of health, science and medicine.  In addition; respected, respectable, dedicated, knowledgeable, and humble enough to speak to me when I began and needed insight for the best newest pathway. And as of date they continue to fuel me on my quest along the pathway to reach 'My Olympic Dream' ".

"The addition of SSG Tri-Quad MD Link holds an intrinsic value to me. Placed within SSGHACT site to share educational enlightenment and may be used as a shortcut or gateway for clinical information leading to better, healthier habit forming lifestyle changes".

*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*

If the research was already documented. Why did you pursue any further?

"In the beginning 17 years of instructing, teaching, training and coaching gymnasts in the field of Women's Olympic style gymnastics. I observed many students who were vivacious, excited, hungry and willing to go all the way to obtain a new skill or a higher ranked position at each competition. No matter what the level of difficulty, hours of training, physical conditions they endured, or obstacles they needed to cross, they did it. They know who they are. And I am proud to say I have shared the bronze, silver and golden, opportunities to cross paths, meet and work with many of these highly charged highly-spirited world level athletes / people.

In comparison I also observed that many high caliber athletes once on the verge of reaching the opportunity to compete for a position on an International or World level circuit  seemed as if they short-circuited. Lowered energy level, lack of interest, keeping their skills honed, perfected, and losing the ability to focus. (What I refer at Snow Shadow Gym when one needs to focus; "the nano second". Defined by: NOW! no NOW! no NOW! It is the everlasting always changing energy of time. To stay in the "Nano Second" is to be fully aware of conscious thought. A key trait taught to Snow Shadow Gymnasts). Questions that came to mind; What link were these athletes missing? Was there something else I or other coaches can do to keep that spirit alive? They are so close to obtaining international and World level of competition why would they stop? ...

If, you are a coach, I am certain these same thoughts have crossed your mind. Can we not have just a little better edge on keeping the Spirit of Olympic competition alive?

It was now my compassion for these children (athletes) one's so close but falling just short that fueled and compelled me to search for a way and find an answer or link to this particular condition.  Closest I could find was referred to as, "Burn-out Syndrome".   My quest or next project was than to design and develop a fitness system (program) for Olympic caliber gymnasts to experience and participate in other recreational sports with the hypothesis being; educating and providing students variety of other new and diverse activities would stimulate both mental and physical awareness.  In turn  this may offer a partial solution in affect to combat or curb the effects of Burn-Out Syndrome.  With all possibilities of a refreshed attitude and enhanced physical stamina upon the athlete returning to their normal gymnastics training regime. And continue to reach their Olympic Dream.

As a professional coach, and with all do respect for gymnasts to maintain a high caliber performance of skills. Scheduling a 2-3 week high altitude "fitness retreat" (SSGHACT coined phrase) sojourn would be no small task. Also taking into account the effect of possible deviation, and redistribution of the gymnasts acute center of balance do to the gymnasts exclusion from use of their normal gymnastics apparatus. So as not to lead the gymnast off the path to their "Olympic Dream".   They are reminded this style or program design is a "fitness retreat" (SSGHACT coined phrase), and they will be returning to their regularly scheduled practice sessions after completion of Snow Shadow Gymnastics High Altitude Cross-Training Camp.

Hence;  "Snow Shadow Gymnastics High Altitude Cross-Training Camp was born.

And proud to boast;

"The 1st Women's Gymnastics High Altitude Cross-Training program of it's kind in America".

Imparting Correspondence (excerpts) from SSG Research

Coach Kirk excerpt; from personal correspondence to Timberline Trails Inc.,11/97 vol.3

I have been researching high altitude training (H.A.T.) and nutrition material from Northern Arizona University, Colorado Springs Training Center and numerous other relevant research articles, not excluding Dept. of Physiology Geneva, Switzerland, Kinesiology Dept. of Ontario, Canada, British Athletic Federation, Nutrition Research Center, Masstricht, Netherlands and a few selected readings from high climbs in Nepal.

I have discovered that there are no designated High Altitude Gymnastics Training facilities in America. I feel we could provide a unique and exceptional training grounds for our athletes here in the United States. With what you can provide as of date along with a gymnastics training program I can provide we will undoubtedly be the "1st High Altitude Gymnastics Camp" in North America. Hereafter I will refer to this camp as ... [more to follow]
