Bruce D. Kirk, a veteran of over 40 years in the sport field of Women’s Olympic style gymnastics owner/ director of Snow Shadow Gymnastics High Altitude Cross-Training which began a pilot-research study in 1992 to pursue and develop safe new and useful educational health fitness training systems to be shared for ways to better health and educational progress
Natural Physiological Effects & Health
Benefits Gained
While Training in a Natural Pristine
High Altitude Mountain Environment By Bruce D. Kirk
Coach Kirk’s study was first based on the concept and perseverance to design a new approach to diminish the cause and effect of “burn-out syndrome”. This condition effects many talented athletes/individuals in the numerous Olympic centers, gyms and dojo's throughout the U.S. and world abroad. “With the highly rigorous training methods and hours demanded in the gym for students to have an opportunity to be a world level contender many of these individuals fall just short of their Olympic Dream".
Once finding our most suitable location for such a diverse undertaking in 1994 Snow Shadow Gymnastics offered the first Women’s Gymnastics High Altitude Cross-Training Summer Camp of it’s kind in the U.S. based in Montrose, Colorado. Activities included gymnastics, hiking, swimming, weight training and horseback riding only to mention a few. Kirk’s concept was to combine diversified sport activities in a natural high altitude environment so not to impede what strengths and talents the athletes already possess, but to enhance physical stamina and all-around attitude. In this manner and methods novice and world level athletes can participate and experience other activities for a more enjoyable approach for fitness as Coach Kirk coined the phrase "a fitness reprieve” to curtail that feeling of burn-out. Individuals or athletes can once again dream with a renewed vigor for better health and a better sense of well-being. The ten consecutive years following Snow Shadow Gym gathered hard data. The health benefits gained by individuals while attending SSGHACT program uncovered a magnitude of invaluable health benefits beginning with enhanced red blood cells, increased Vo2 (oxygen lung capacity), muscle mass, as well as reduced body fat, and lower heart rates and blood pressure upon return to lower altitude. In November of 1999 Snow Shadow Gymnastics found it’s niche. Opening their doors in Montrose, Colorado for one of the most diversified sport facilities of its kind offering year round recreational and competitive Olympic style gymnastics instruction including "Unique Needs" classes and rehabilitation programs for groups and individuals throughout the United States. In addition, over the 15 years of operation Snow Shadow has added Judo, Karate, MMA, Music, Arts, and Alternative Developmental Enrichment programs for both recreational and competitive arenas.
